Ain’t Misbehavin’, Taproot Theatre
I love the Roaring 20s. Art Deco! Jazz! Flapper Dresses! Sure, prohibition was a thing, but that’s why there were speakeasies and clubs to enjoy your French 75! (Fun fact, many sweet cocktails were created during this period to hide the alcohol!) If I could time travel, visiting a club during the Harlem Renaissance would totally be on my list.
While not quite the same, an evening at Ain’t Misbehavin’, celebrating the music of Fats Waller, is a fun trip. The small stage at the Taproot is perfect for the simple yet intimate set: a Harlem nightclub in the 30s. Waller is known for his stride piano style. I couldn’t tell you what that is, but his compositions such as Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Honeysuckle Rose remain well known today, and the five performers backed by a five member band, did his songs justice: 30 songs either composed or sung by Waller performed over two hours. There’s not really a plot, although performers did act out some during their performances. Lots of romantic drama!
All of the voices were fantastic. Every performer had a chance to shine. And with so much material, there’s something for everyone: Love, comedy, protest, joy! My personal favorites were Black and Blue, a protest number performed by the whole troupe and the soulful Keepin’ Out of Mischief Now.
See Ain’t Misbehavin’ The Fats Waller Musical Show at the Taproot Theatre through April 25.
