Fancy Dancer, Seattle Rep

Fancy Dancer is a one woman show written and performed by playwright and former ballerina Larissa FastHorse. I went into this not knowing anything about the show except it was a one person show and this was the world premiere. One person shows aren’t my favorite, but it can be fun to attend a new show and going in fairly blind. Here, Lara tells the story of growing up half Lakota half white in South Dakota by her adoptive German parents. Lara doesn’t feel like she belongs, but becomes focused on becoming a ballerina like her idol Maria Tallchief. The narrative is fairly straightforward but it is moving. When she succeeds the audiences cheered and I have to admit I was crying pretty hard by the end.
