Poster for "The Suffs" musical featuring powerful women in history.

SUFFS, The Firth Avenue Theater, Seattle

Excited to see the launch of the SUFFS National tour in Seattle. I loved this show on broadway and loved it here.  I love history and love musicals, so this show is a treat. This all female show is based on true events on the struggle for women’s suffrage, highlighting the different factions within the movement.  The old guard is led by Carrie Chapman Catt, who opens the show with “Let Mother Vote.” Alice Paul is the feisty up and comer, and her faction’s anthem is “Great American Bitch.”  So, slightly different outlooks, lol. Journalist  Ida B. Wells, co-founder of the NAACP, leads the final faction. Ida had one of my favorite songs in the show “Wait My Turn” responding to the more radical Alice Paul sidelining black women to placate the south. President. Wilson is the main antagonist, very smarmy and patronizing. So, typical politician. All the performances were excellent, with rousing songs and an interesting and true story. The choreography, staging and music in the scene where the women are protesting (again) outside the White House really came together for a powerful and moving scene.

I first saw this show in 2024, and I will admit the soundtrack hasn’t been on my rotation. There are some fun, catchy songs here.
